We now know that many eye diseases occur or begin at the outer edges of the retina, (“the periphery”), so examining this area is extremely important. Because seeing the entire retina is so important at Redbourn Eyecare we have invested in the most advanced camera for ultra-widefield photography and angiography. In a single, quick shot, this camera produces optomap photos or angiograms of about 82% of the retina. These optomap images provide superior visibility of the retinal periphery allowing us to see, document, show you, and follow pathology that could not be seen with traditional eye cameras. The optomap exam is quick and painless and combined with the thorough eye exams our Optometrists are trained to provide this advanced technology offers a new level of diagnostic confidence. We are proud and happy to offer this service to our patients.

Contact Lens Assessments

Did you know that about 80% of blindness and irreversible vision loss is caused by back-of-the-eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy and Age-related macular Degeneration? The good news is that regular eye exams and early detection of these diseases can prevent irreversible vision loss. Not all eye diseases are age-related so it is recommended to start monitoring the health of your eyes early in life. Redbourn Eyecare now offers a complete Eye Wellness evaluation with the REVO OCT.

Contact Lens Assessments

Most people who need to wear glasses can wear contact lenses. There are two main types of contact lenses:

  • soft lenses which mould to the shape of your eye
  • rigid gas permeable lenses (RGP lenses) which are fitted closely to the shape of your eye and are less flexible.

Myopia (Short-sightedness) Management

In the UK, the prevalence of myopia in children aged  between 10-16 years has more than doubled over the last  50 years, and children are becoming myopic at a younger  age, putting them at a high risk of developing sight threatening ocular pathology as a result. We offer multiple solutions for parents considering myopia management for their child.

Our Story

Roshana and Karan Malik, met at Aston University in Birmingham where they completed their degree in Optometry. Shortly after, they both also completed their Doctor of Optometry equivalency at the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Having worked within busy community corporate and independent practices, they decided to expand their scope of practice and began working with a refractive surgery company - gaining experience in pre and post operative care. Their next career move was into hospital optometry working alongside highly experienced consultant ophthalmologists at Moorfields Eye Hospital - where they are currently still working part time.

Whilst searching for a home in Redbourn, they fell upon a space which they felt could be transformed into a local Eyecare practice for the village and surrounding areas - encompassing all of the experience they had gained along the way. Since the summer of 2017, Redbourn Eyecare has been providing quality eyecare services and products to all patients.

The Optometrists are joined by a team of knowledgeable, dedicated and lovely staff that complete the model of a neighbourhood eyecare practice.

Our Team

Dr. Karan Malik – Principal Optometrist, Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Glaucoma & Managing Director

Karan, originally from Canada, moved to the UK to pursue a degree in Optometry at Aston University in Birmingham. After graduating in 2010, he completed his pre-registration year in a busy community practice and a university hospital ophthalmology department in South London. During this time, he gained valuable experience in acute eyecare services, binocular vision and orthoptic clinics, low vision clinics, and neonatal ophthalmology.

In 2014, Karan briefly returned to Canada to complete his Doctor of Optometry Equivalency at the University of Waterloo, further strengthening his clinical skills and expertise.

After returning to the UK, Karan and his wife established Redbourn Eyecare—a joint venture created to provide high-quality eyecare with a strong emphasis on clinical excellence, continuity of care, and a personalised patient experience.

Karan went on to complete his Independent Prescribing qualification, enabling him to manage and treat a wide range of eye conditions. He was later promoted to Principal Optometrist and Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Glaucoma at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, where he works part-time within the Glaucoma service.

He previously spent six years providing post-operative care for cataract, refractive lens exchange, and implantable contact lens (ICL) patients at a well-established clinic on Harley Street, gaining valuable surgical co-management experience.

Outside of work, Karan is a keen motorsport enthusiast, avid traveller, and bodybuilding devotee.

Dr. Roshana Malik, Specialist Optometrist & Clinical Director

Born and raised in the UK, Roshana’s interest in eyecare began at a young age. With a strong family history of myopia (short-sightedness) and glaucoma, she attended regular eye examinations from childhood—an early and personal connection that sparked her passion for Optometry and Ophthalmology.

Roshana graduated with a degree in Optometry from Aston University in 2010. She completed her pre-registration year at a busy community practice in Luton, with hospital placements at the respected Ophthalmology department at Luton & Dunstable Hospital. There, she gained experience across a variety of clinics, including Emergency Eye Care, Medical Retina, Low Vision, and Paediatrics.

After several years in community practice across the UK, Roshana broadened her clinical expertise by working in pre- and post-operative care for a refractive surgery clinic in London. She went on to complete the Doctor of Optometry Equivalency at the University of Waterloo in Canada, further advancing her clinical acumen.

Upon returning to the UK, Roshana and her husband established Redbourn Eyecare—a joint venture committed to providing high-quality eyecare with a personal, patient-centred approach.

Roshana has since completed her Independent Prescribing qualification, enabling her to diagnose and manage a range of ocular conditions. She currently works part-time as a Specialist Optometrist in the Medical Retina service at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, where she also has experience in Oculoplastic clinics.

In her spare time, Roshana is a keen foodie and traveller—and enjoys a well-deserved dose of retail therapy.

Ever the creative, Emma is a qualified florist and runs her own small business in her spare time. She has always lived in the village and loves working locally.

By far the most popular member of our team! Layla joined us in 2018 and has made herself at home ever since. Layla enjoys saying hello to all our patients on her daily walks around the village, however she requires a bit more training in the field of optometry.
